Best Time to Visit Hanoi
Hanoi is a city that moves to its own rhythm — a thousand-year-old capital where ancient pagodas hide behind banyan trees, vendors balance baskets of pho across bamboo poles, and the roar of a million motorbikes provides the constant soundtrack. The Old Quarter's 36 streets have been trading for centuries, Hoan Kiem Lake offers an oasis of calm in the chaos, and the street food scene is arguably the best in Southeast Asia. But Hanoi's weather swings wildly through the seasons — steaming summers with monsoon rains, chilly grey winters, and glorious but brief shoulder seasons that reward those who time their visit right.

November
Hanoi's other peak month — cool, dry, and crisp with temperatures around 20-25°C. The city looks its best with golden afternoon light filtering through tree-lined boulevards. Tourist numbers climb and prices rise accordingly. An excellent time for day trips to Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, and the Perfume Pagoda.
March
Spring arrives with rising temperatures and the first hints of warmth. Still cloudy and drizzly at times, but the persistent cold lifts. Flowers bloom around the lakes and parks. A pleasant shoulder season with moderate prices and manageable crowds — one of the better months for sightseeing.
December
Cold returns with grey skies, drizzle, and temperatures dropping to 15°C. The damp cold feels penetrating despite the moderate numbers. Christmas is celebrated with surprising enthusiasm around the cathedral district. The cool weather makes Hanoi's famous pho and bun cha taste even better. Pack warm layers — most buildings lack heating.
April
One of Hanoi's best months. Warm and increasingly sunny with temperatures around 25-28°C. Humidity rises but hasn't reached oppressive summer levels. The city comes alive with outdoor activity around the lakes. Occasional rain showers are brief. Excellent balance of weather, crowds, and value.
June
Hot, humid, and wet — Hanoi at its most intense. Temperatures reach 34-36°C with heavy monsoon rains that can flood streets. The heat is oppressive, especially in the dense Old Quarter. But the city offers great value, markets are vibrant, and the food scene never stops. Best explored in early mornings and evenings.
September
Still hot and rainy but conditions slowly improve toward month's end. The Mid-Autumn Festival is magical — children carry star lanterns through the Old Quarter, and mooncake sellers line every street. National Day brings patriotic celebrations. The cheapest time to visit Hanoi, with few other tourists around.
May
Summer heat arrives in force — temperatures regularly hit 33°C+ with climbing humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms become common, heavy but usually brief. Mornings are often clear and good for sightseeing. The heat thins tourist crowds and drives prices down. Tropical fruit floods the markets.
July
Peak summer with stifling heat and the heaviest rainfall of the year. Expect daily downpours, often dramatic but sometimes flooding low-lying streets. Domestic tourists travel but international visitors are scarce. The Old Quarter's covered lanes offer some shelter. Air-conditioned museums and cafes become essential refuges.
August
The wettest month — Hanoi receives the most rainfall in August, with heavy downpours and occasional flooding. Temperatures remain in the low 30s with extreme humidity. Not the most comfortable time to explore, but hotels offer their lowest rates and the city's indoor attractions — museums, temples, and legendary cafes — reward patient visitors.
January
Cold and grey with persistent drizzle and overcast skies — Hanoi's winter is not what most expect from Southeast Asia. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C with high humidity making it feel colder. But the street food scene thrives in the chill, and Tet preparations bring color and energy to the markets. Pack layers and a rain jacket.
October
The transformation begins — Hanoi's finest season arrives. Skies clear, humidity drops, and temperatures settle into a perfect 22-29°C range. The air feels fresh after months of monsoon. Trees around the lakes show autumn color. This is arguably the single best month to visit Hanoi — comfortable, uncrowded, and beautiful.
February
Tet dominates February — the Old Quarter fills with peach blossom branches and kumquat trees, then empties as residents leave for their hometowns. Many restaurants close for 3-5 days. The weather remains cold and misty. After Tet, the Perfume Pagoda festival draws pilgrims. A culturally fascinating but logistically tricky time.

Safety & things to know
Hanoi is generally safe for tourists with a low rate of violent crime. The main risks are petty theft and traffic. The Old Quarter is bustling at all hours and feels safe, but motorbike bag-snatching is a real concern, especially after dark.
