Best Time to Visit Egypt
Egypt is a land of staggering antiquity — a place where colossal pyramids have watched over the desert for four and a half thousand years, where pharaonic temples line the banks of the Nile, and where the bustle of Cairo's medieval bazaars has barely changed in centuries. From the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the vast silence of the Sahara, Egypt offers an experience that few destinations can match. But timing matters enormously — summer heat in Upper Egypt is brutal, while winter brings perfect temperatures and peak crowds.

March
Spring brings warming temperatures and the start of the khamsin — hot, sandy winds that blow in from the Sahara. These storms are intermittent and usually last a day or two. Between storms, the weather is warm and pleasant. Crowds thin out and prices drop from winter peaks.
November
Excellent weather across Egypt — warm days, cool nights, and virtually no rain. Ideal for Nile cruises, temple visits, and desert adventures. Tourism picks up steadily. Book Nile cruises and popular hotels in advance.
February
Excellent conditions continue with slightly warming temperatures. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival on February 22 draws visitors to watch sunlight illuminate the inner sanctuary. Nile cruises are at their best. Still busy but slightly less crowded than December-January.
April
Getting warm but still manageable for sightseeing, especially in the mornings and evenings. Easter brings a brief surge of European visitors. Khamsin sandstorms remain possible. If Ramadan falls in April, expect altered restaurant hours but a fascinating cultural experience.
June
Summer heat sets in across Egypt. Upper Egypt bakes at 40°C+ and outdoor sightseeing becomes grueling. Cairo is hot and dusty. However, prices plummet and major sites are nearly empty. The Red Sea resorts stay busy with beach tourists escaping the interior heat.
July
The hottest period continues — Luxor and Aswan regularly exceed 42°C. Only recommended for the Red Sea coast or if you genuinely thrive in extreme heat. The upside: rock-bottom prices and you may have the Valley of the Kings virtually to yourself.
August
Temperatures remain extreme in the interior. Nile cruises still run but sightseeing is best limited to early morning hours. Red Sea resorts see some European summer holiday traffic. Budget travelers who can handle the heat will find incredible deals.
May
The heat becomes noticeable, particularly in Luxor and Aswan where temperatures push past 35°C. Cairo is warm but bearable. Crowds thin significantly and prices drop. The Red Sea coast remains pleasant with warm water temperatures perfect for diving.
October
One of the best months to visit — temperatures drop to comfortable levels across the country. The second Abu Simbel Sun Festival occurs on October 22. Nile cruise season restarts in earnest. Crowds and prices begin climbing but haven't peaked yet.
September
The heat starts to recede, though it remains hot in Upper Egypt. A transitional month — savvy travelers can still find low-season pricing while enjoying improving conditions. The Red Sea has warm, calm waters with outstanding visibility.
December
Peak season with the best weather but the highest prices and biggest crowds. Christmas and New Year's bring a massive influx of tourists. Luxor and Aswan are at their most pleasant. Book well ahead — popular cruises and hotels sell out months in advance.
January
One of the best months to visit — cool, comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring temples and tombs. Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan) is perfect at 20-25°C. Peak tourist season means busy sites and higher prices, but the weather makes it worthwhile.

Safety & things to know
Egypt's major tourist areas are well-policed and generally safe for visitors. The tourism police maintain a visible presence at all major sites. However, persistent hassling from touts and unofficial guides at tourist sites is extremely common and can be exhausting.
