Best Time to Visit Egypt

Egypt is a land of staggering antiquity — a place where colossal pyramids have watched over the desert for four and a half thousand years, where pharaonic temples line the banks of the Nile, and where the bustle of Cairo's medieval bazaars has barely changed in centuries. From the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the vast silence of the Sahara, Egypt offers an experience that few destinations can match. But timing matters enormously — summer heat in Upper Egypt is brutal, while winter brings perfect temperatures and peak crowds.

Safety & things to know

Egypt's major tourist areas are well-policed and generally safe for visitors. The tourism police maintain a visible presence at all major sites. However, persistent hassling from touts and unofficial guides at tourist sites is extremely common and can be exhausting.

Aggressive touts and self-appointed guides at tourist sites — firmly decline and keep walking
Avoid the Sinai border areas and western desert border regions — check government travel advisories
Taxi scams are common — use Uber/Careem apps or agree on a fare before getting in
Women travelers may experience unwanted attention — dress modestly and consider a guide for solo travel
Stay hydrated in the heat and avoid tap water — drink bottled water only
Petty theft can occur in crowded markets and on public transport — keep valuables secure
